One thing that I have come to notice about sponsors, as they choose their child, maybe a child they have met before and have already bonded with or it could be one they just decided upon while looking through the pictures, one thing the sponsors have in common is they say, “That one is MINE.”
Meet Neline. She is MINE. I met her when I was on my first trip to Haiti and she may never know how much she has changed my life. We immediately bonded. I don’t think I said even one word to her when I first met her, but we played and sang together. Something in her eyes captured me. She was such an incredible little girl and I really cannot even begin to tell you the impact she has had on me. She changed my life.
I returned to Haiti 5 months later, I went from brown hair to blonde. Most of my friends even had a hard time recognizing me. But not Neline. From an entire soccer field away, as I got off the truck, she ran to me. I mean RAN! She through her little arms around my neck and we hugged for what felt like hours. I knew in that moment I didn’t ever want to let her go. And I haven’t ever since. She holds a special place in my heart. A few people understand what I mean.
(Neline is pictured here on the right. This is my favorite picture of her. So much joy.)
I look at her and I just start to cry. My heart breaks with love for this little girl who I have barely even spoken to but I love her and I know she loves me. We write little notes to each other when I’m there. This last April that I went to Haiti, we spoke a little more. She did my hair. I think she realizes now that I will be in her life more then she may have thought the first time I saw her. She understand that I will come back and visit her. We still cry when I leave. She doesn’t know about Chasing Eden. She doesn’t understand how her simple little smile is bringing sponsorship to every one of her friends at C.A.D. She doesn’t understand that this was her idea. Chasing Eden exists because of her.
I am just overwhelmed by this verse from the Lord.
Isaiah 43:1 “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”
God looks down on us, in our mess, when we are dirty, when we don’t belong, when we are poor and he says, “No! I have REDEEMED you! I call you MINE!” He points to us and he says, “That one is MINE.”
And that is my desire for Chasing Eden. That believers will see these children, even though they can be messy and dirty and forgotten, and they say, “That one right there, that one is MINE.”
Take about 10 seconds and watch this sweet video of Neline saying goodbye. 🙂
