It is no secret that I am a fan of Disney movies and of course the music. One of my favorite lines from the famous Little Mermaid song is “What’s a fire and why does it burn?” She says two profound things in this line: the first being “What is a fire?” and the second “Why does it burn?” Coming from a mermaid who has spent her whole life under water it is no surprise that she doesn’t know what fire is. The second question she asks is a little deeper. “Why does it burn?” Why does fire burn? Fire burns for multiple reasons. Controlled fire burns to light a candle and bring a nice scent to the room. Fire burns to keep us warm. Uncontrolled fire burns to destroy. Fire brings light. The purpose of a fire can change drastically from good to bad. Applying this to our lives, say we are fire. What are we and why do we burn? Are we zoned in to something specific with our purposes and our passions and are we burning for good? Are we uncontrolled with our passions or misdirected and are we causing destruction. Or maybe we are a dull fire that couldn’t keep anyone warm or cause any real damage even if we tried, simply serving no real purpose at all. In other words, who are we as people and what are we here for. “What is your Passion?”
Now, I can go on and on about a bunch of things that I like doing. None of which are really bad things. Most are selfish things that I do just because they make me happy and that’s how we are about a lot of things. We play sports because it makes us happy or we write music because it makes us happy. We take the things we enjoy or we are good at and do them for the purpose of entertainment or to bring a sense of fulfillment to ourselves and we say THIS is what I am passionate about. These things aren’t bad things but without purpose, what an empty passion that is. You are saying that I am passionate about entertaining myself. Why not take some of these gifts, like sports or music, and add significant purpose to them? You can use these things to help the people around you and bring glory to God.
I realize that I have done some good things in my life but I also realize that I have spent a significant amount of time doing nothing of real significance. I don’t even want to know how much time I have spent on Facebook, Vine, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc. Even the time that I have spent perfecting my christian walk if all I am doing is reading the Bible, attending “Christian” events, going to church, missions, etc. and I never give out what I am putting in then what good am I really doing? There is so much more that I am missing.
As followers of Christ, we were not saved by grace to simply enjoy our years on the earth going to work to pick up a pay check then repeating that routine week after week until we die. Yes, we are blessed and we can enjoy those blessings but don’t stop there. This world is full of hurting people who don’t know the love of Christ that you know. Burn for that! Burn for the hurting, the poor, the needy, the orphaned, the widow. Not every person will go overseas and pull girls out of bondage and slavery, some will. Some will work in an office for a basic company but even there…BURN! Be a light. Hurting people are everywhere. In every country, city, town, office building there is someone hurting who needs the love of Christ. Catch the passion for these people. If you don’t know where to start, start with the poor. Jesus was passionate about serving the poor. This is one of my favorite passages of scripture and for me personally, this is what I burn for:
6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousnesswill go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
“If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,
10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.
11 The LORD will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.
12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
That was the goal of Christ, to seek and save the lost. He has called us to do the same. We have been saved and gifted for this purpose, to seek and save the lost. Jesus also commands us to go and preach the gospel wherever we are. That could be in another country, volunteering at a church, or in your work place just being Christ to others every day. I want to encourage you to take the time and pray, ask God where he wants to send you. There is an amazing purpose and calling on your life. A lot of people who are reading this blog, you have grown up in a Christian home. You have been blessed beyond belief and constantly filled with the Word of God. Give that out! Many of you are blessed financially. Bless someone else who is in need. Many of you are blessed with free time. Spend it on people in need. Pray that God will light a passion in your heart for something specific. Maybe it is a cause, an organization, maybe special needs individuals, youth, elderly, maybe women and children being trafficked, maybe it is slavery. Whatever it is, pray and ask God to light your heart on fire for SOMETHING! Then Google it. Seriously. Find information about what God has laid on your heart. Fuel the fire. Find somewhere close by that you can tangibly give out of your passion right now. TODAY! You have been blessed with the knowledge of the Gospel, the most precious gift. Give that out! Let your heart burn for the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Burn.
Your world may be in Tulsa or it may be in Haiti. Wherever you are…BURN! And BURN with PURPOSE. Be a light in the dark. Search out the dark places in your city, town, workplace, school, seek out the dark and shine the light of Jesus Christ there. Don’t be afraid. There are organizations and churches all over the place. Find a place full of people to selflessly pour the love of Christ into. Burn for something. Maybe you burn for youth kids at your church, maybe you burn for orphans in Haiti. Whatever it is, burn for something. Figure out who you are…you are good at something, maybe sports, music, business, art whatever it may be. Then, in whatever you are called to do, whatever you are gifted in, whatever brings you joy, use those things and burn for the people around you. Wherever you are called you are accompanied by Christ. That is what verse 20 here says, when the disciples went out and did what Jesus asked them to do he confirmed his word!
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
What’s a fire and why does it burn?
Why are you burning today? Why are you existing today? What is your purpose and what are your goals today as you exist? Are you just trying to make it to tomorrow? Are you simply trying to check off of your list that you read your bible today? Or are you actually fired up about seeing the lost people around you find Jesus? Are you burning to see hurting people be restored? What are you passionate about?
Catch the fire and then DO something about it. Burn.[rachel]
